A site for youth “VOKA” is a place of meeting for the representatives of Belarus' virtual society. Today “VOKA” is a community of young, active, and talented Belarusians from all over the world.
A site for youth “VOKA” is a Belarusian Internet community directed to raise young people on the grounds of Belarusian national idea, and to make it known to the wider levels of society. Considering the conditions in which Belarusian language and culture found itself, such initiative is believed to be a timely action by its organizers, as well as by those who cherish our heritage and want to see our culture thriving and developing.
The means and goals of “VOKA” are: activities of mass-propaganda as a path to revitalize Belarusian culture, language, and to foster a feeling of responsibility for the fate of the country among the people, as well as expression of a strong standing on civic problems.
Our Internet resource provides objective foreign and international news, and analytic materials. A project assists the creation of a civic society in Belarus. The Belarusian language is an official language of this project. The materials will be brought from a wide range of sources: governmental, independent and of our own correspondents. All this will create new image of a Belarusian young individual, as a full-fledged European, who understands the value of being a free, creative, and active citizen, the one who will be able to stand lawfully for his/her civil rights.
We are actively working with a number of independent organizations, movements, initiatives, internet-projects and other civic institutions.
Our initiative was created in December of 2003. From the very start its coordinators organized many interesting activities with the purpose of raising activity of the civic society.
Among many events were discussions on such topics as “The Condition of Belarusian Language in the Society”, soccer championships “For Belarusian Language”, “VOKA Cup”. Also the volunteers of VOKA helped in organizing and providing the informational support to the concerts like “I love Lyceum”, “Generals of the National Rock”, “Youth for Belarus”, “Rock after vacations 2005”.
Besides that we initiated demonstrations, which were supported by patriotic organizations in our country and also by people not indifferent to the Belarusian culture. For example, an action “Make-BY” promoted increase of the number of web sites in
Belarusian. One of the first sites that responded to our message was the Internet portal about the capital of our state www.myminsk.com, and during the action itself the administrators of many web-resources sent us messages of support.
We stood up as one of organizers of rally “We want to study in Belarusian!” It was conducted with the youth of Jakub Kolas Belarusian Humanitarian Lyceum and the Association of Belarusian students. We demanded the government to give students of schools and universities an opportunity to have Belarusian education. Rally grew into an entire campaign, which lasted from 2004 to 2007.
We haven't missed music either. When the interest to the Belarusian music was dwindling we started campaign “Sturm FM-1” and “Sturm FM-2”, the goal of which was to bring more Belarusian songs and Belarusian language in general on the air. As a support of “Sturm FM” we started a music Internet resource “Choose the best song of the year”. The visitors of its site during the entire year of 2004 were giving their votes in seven tours to find out the most popular Belarusian artist.
Also our activists around the country coordinated campaign “Cell-Phones in Belarusian”. That project was put up together with “Association of Belarusian Language”, and its objective was to gather signatures for creating Wireless services in Belarusian. During several months
thousands of signatures were collected. Along with a number of flash mobs it caused “MTS”, a cellular phones manufacturer from Russia, to create a Belarusian version of its website, and also to consider our other demands in the near future.
Jointly with the BMAgroup VOKA created “Belarusian Music Fan Club”. There every week admirers of different styles of native music come together to discuss different issues in the circle of open-minded people. Professional musicians are frequently invited to the club meetings.
We also published the collections poetry Our Time and Our Time-2. Those books included works of seem-to-be-average citizens of Belarus, and they were selected after reviewing the opinion polls on the initiative's official site: www.voka.tk.
